Autonomy and EV Daily: 8 June 2026

Electric vehicle adoption and autonomous vehicle operations both drew attention this week, with verified news on robotaxi incidents, durability data, hardware sightings, and record Australian sales. Forum chatter around full household EV switches, highway charging networks, and timelines for SAE Level 5 autonomy remained active, though those threads rest on anecdote rather than published data.

Self-driving cars in daily use, and daily misuse

San Francisco police said a January 2026 burglary at Hot 8 Yoga in the Marina District was likely the city's first criminal getaway in a self-driving vehicle, according to Engadget. Investigators said the suspect loaded stolen yoga apparel into a Waymo robotaxi and rode away. As of early June, no arrest had been reported. The same report notes that officials framed the incident as a first for San Francisco, while Engadget also cites a prior Waymo-related case, so the claim of a wholly unprecedented event remains open to dispute. Separately, online discussions continued asking how close the industry is to SAE Level 5 operation with no human driver required, a question that still has no firm answer from regulators or manufacturers.

Longevity data puts Tesla mileage claims on firmer ground

An iSeeCars analysis of more than 174 million vehicles found Tesla models carry a 4.6% chance of reaching 250,000 miles, compared with 2.3% for Subaru, meaning a Tesla is roughly twice as likely to cross that distance. Tesla ranked sixth overall among brands in the study. InsideEVs reported the same findings, and Carscoops offered additional coverage of the results. The numbers give EV skeptics and buyers alike something concrete beyond forum posts about high-mileage Teslas.

Cybercab sightings and a wider Austin robotaxi footprint

TeslaOracle reported Cybercab units appearing at locations across the United States, including an Atlanta Tesla store tied to FSD testing and showroom display. The same piece noted Tesla expanding its Unsupervised Robotaxi service to the entire Austin metro area. Visible hardware in service centers and a broader geographic rollout suggest Tesla is still building toward larger-scale autonomous deployment, even as public debate over timelines continues.

Model Y tops Australia as EV registrations surge

VFACTS figures for May 2026 show the Tesla Model Y as Australia's best-selling vehicle for the first time, with 5,605 deliveries placing it ahead of the Ford Ranger, per CarExpert. Battery-electric sales rose 111.6% year on year to a record 19.9% market share in the month. The Electric Vehicle Council noted that electric vehicles are now nudging a combined 30% sales share when plug-in hybrids are included, with the Model Y becoming the country's top-selling car outright. The result marks a sharp shift in a market where pickup trucks have long dominated the sales charts.

AutonomyEV's opinion

Autonomous vehicles are already woven into ordinary city life, which means they will also appear in ordinary crime stories. The Hot 8 Yoga case says little about robotaxi safety and more about how any widely available transport tool can be misused. We should take SF police at their word that this was likely a local first, while staying honest that "first" claims in a fast-moving sector rarely stay tidy for long.

The durability study and Australian sales figures point in the same direction from different angles. EVs are accumulating real-world miles at scale, and buyers in major markets are voting with their wallets. Tesla's robotaxi expansion and Cybercab appearances remain incremental steps toward a fuller product, and they are worth tracking on those terms. Measured optimism fits the evidence: autonomy and electrification are advancing on multiple fronts, even when the daily news mix includes yoga-store burglaries alongside record registration numbers.
