GM is building a new battery facility that it claims will anchor its next round of electric vehicles. The TechCrunch report describes a Michigan site sized for a specific cell format and chemistry not yet in volume production.
Facility Scope
The plant targets annual output in the low tens of GWh once ramped. GM has not disclosed the exact cell supplier or final chemistry in public updates beyond general cost and energy density goals. Past Ultium lines took longer to stabilize than initial schedules projected.
Battery Targets
The new format is meant to lower pack cost below current Ultium levels while maintaining or improving range. No independent test data or third-party validation of the claimed metrics has been released. GM's 2024 10-K filing lists ongoing risks around cell supply consistency and yield rates.
Timeline Risks
Construction is underway with first production slated for late 2027. Comparable lines at other automakers have required 18 to 24 months of debugging after mechanical completion. GM has not published a detailed ramp schedule or contingency volumes from alternate suppliers.
