Samsung SDI will produce Volkswagen's unified prismatic cells at the existing Göd factory in Hungary. The battery-tech.net report states the Korean firm secured the contract after VW settled on a single prismatic format across brands.

Cell Format Details

The unified cell uses an 800-volt architecture and prismatic housing. Volkswagen outlined this unified approach in its battery strategy update. VW selected this shape to simplify pack assembly and reduce material use compared with earlier pouch and cylindrical trials. Output targets passenger cars first, then commercial vehicles.

Timeline and Capacity

Series production starts in 2027. The Göd site already makes cells for VW models. No new greenfield investment is mentioned, which limits execution risk but caps near-term volume growth.

AutonomyEV's opinion

Standardized cells cut development cost only if VW holds to one format across platforms for several years. Past supplier switches and format changes have erased similar savings. Operators should track actual cell yield and pack integration data from 2027 vehicles before assuming lower bill-of-materials costs reach customers.
